What is a fiduciary?

A fiduciary advisor is a financial professional who is legally obligated to put clients’ best interests first. Fiduciary advisors are held to two distinct standards.

  • The duty of care standard means that the advisor must provide advice that is in the client’s best interest while also executing the advice in the best way possible for the client. This standard also requires the advisor provide ongoing advice throughout the duration of his/her relationship with the client.
  • The duty of loyalty standard requires that the advisor put clients’ interests ahead of his/her own interests. It also requires that the advisor provide full and fair disclosure of all potential conflicts of interest and other material facts that may influence the client-advisor relationship.
